Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about choosing a mt4 forex broker

Why is MetaTrader 4 still so dominant when MT5 exists?
Three reasons: (1) the massive existing library of MT4-only Expert Advisors that traders have built or purchased, (2) MT4's simpler interface that many discretionary traders prefer for forex-only trading, and (3) broker server-side investment — many brokers run extensive MT4 infrastructure they're slow to migrate. MT4 also handles the 90% case (forex) perfectly, so MT5's multi-asset advantages don't matter for forex-focused traders.
Are MT4 spreads the same as the broker's other platforms?
Generally yes — the broker's pricing engine feeds all platforms with the same raw or marked-up spreads. But execution may differ: MT4's older bridge architecture sometimes adds tiny latency vs cTrader or proprietary platforms. For most retail traders this is imperceptible. For active scalpers, comparing live execution is worthwhile.
Can I run my MT4 EAs on MT5?
No — MQL4 and MQL5 are different languages. MT5 has automated migration tools that work for simple EAs but break on anything using market depth, complex chart objects, or specific MT4-only features. Most professional MT4 EA developers offer separate MT5 versions, sometimes free for existing customers.
Is MT4 going away soon?
MetaQuotes officially stopped issuing new MT4 server licenses to brokers in 2018, suggesting eventual sunset. But the existing MT4 server install base will likely persist for many years given EA dependencies. Most active brokers commit to MT4 support indefinitely. New traders are still well-served choosing MT4 if it fits their workflow.
